East Boston is one of Boston’s most significant neighborhoods for housing, commerce and transportation. Often referred to as “Eastie,” this neighborhood has experienced many positive changes throughout its history and continues to evolve in order to adapt to the modern world. This part of Massachussets once consisted of several islands that were filled in to create a cohesive neighborhood. Approximately 41,000 residents live here. The neighborhood consists largely of Italian-Americans along with Latin American and Southeast Asian immigrants. Most of the people work in white-collar professions. The neighborhood’s median household income is $43,713 with an average household size of 2.8 people. The total household expenditure is below the national average. Over 25 percent of adults have a bachelor’s or an advanced degree.
Vintage-style houses as well as restored triple-decker homes can be found throughout much of the neighborhood. Many homes that typify this part of Massachusetts can be found along Cottage Street. Gentrification projects in recent years have resulted in more desirable housing options but have increased rents and home costs for some residents. The neighborhood has also made efforts to restore buildings that were once abandoned and uninhabitable. Median home values are around $442,000 with the median price being listed at $527,000. Rent prices per month in the area are approximately $2,350, which is less than other parts of Boston.
One of the neighborhood’s biggest claims to fame is that it is home to Logan International Airport, which manages many domestic and international flights in and out of Boston. The eastern terminus of Interstate 90 is also situated here. The Blue Line of the rapid transit train operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority runs through the area. Public bus service that makes stops locally as well as in parts of downtown Boston and the city suburbs can also be taken.
Home to America’s first public branch library, this quintessential Massachusetts neighborhood also boasts several quality schools. The neighborhood’s public primary and secondary learning institutions are part of the Boston Public Schools network. Samuel Adams Elementary and Donald McKay K-8 schools feature curriculum that is intended to provide a solid foundation for early learning. Older children can further their education at East Boston High School, which is also known for its football, basketball and soccer teams.
Residents have access to medical care services that can address a wide range of health concerns. The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center has a team of primary care doctors, pediatricians and women’s health specialists. Patients can also receive endocrinology, sports medicine and pulmonary care. Anyone requiring emergency services can visit the center’s Emergency Department, which also has certified interpreters on staff.
In addition to being a great place to live, this neighborhood features several attractions that provide extra sources of entertainment for residents. Some of the best local attractions include:
•Constitution Beach – This seaside destination is the perfect place to spend some time on a warm and sunny day. A pedestrian walkway provides easy access to many points along the beach. A multiuse path connects to Wood Island. The Porrazzo Skating Rink is adjacent to the beach and includes a large ice surface that is open for public skating.
•Piers Park – Picturesque views of the downtown skyline can be seen across Boston Harbor from this park. Brick and granite materials that were used to build the old seawall now line the trails that wind through the park. Many seasonal flowers can be seen blooming in the gardens during certain times of the year. Other features of the park include an amphitheater, a spray pool and the Piers Park Sailing Center.
•Historic Structures – Several homes and other structures that date back to the area’s early days still stand in parts of the neighborhood. Many of these buildings can be seen in the Eagle Hill Historic District. The Donald McKay House is the former residence of a famous ship builder. Some of the neighborhood’s earliest residents have their final resting places at the Bennington Street Burying Ground, which has been in operation since 1838. The current building that houses the Baker Congregational Church has been standing since 1903. The Nantucket Lightship/LV-112, which originally launched in 1936, now sits moored at the Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina and can be toured.
