Although the area only encompasses .36 square miles the neighborhood is home to 12,720 residents and has a low crime rate for an area its size, which is one reason so many people are attracted to the area. The boundaries of the neighborhood are the harbor on the eastern side, the Mystic and Charles Rivers to the north, and Quincy Market and Government Center. The highest point is Copp’s Hill.
The neighborhood is one of the most vibrant and colorful in Massachusetts. At one time the area was known for its large Italian-American population. During the 1930s the population was at its peak then began to decline. Today one of Boston’s most famous neighborhoods has a diverse culture made up of several ethnic groups including African, Asian, and Latino or Hispanic-Americans.
Many of Boston’s famous attractions are in the area. Christ Church known as the Old North Church on Salem Street is where Robert Newman hung lanterns in the steeple on April 18th, 1775 to alert Paul Revere that the British were going to Concord and Lexington by sea at the start of the American Revolution. The Paul Revere House built in 1680 is in North Square. The Freedom Trail links 16 of the historic sites in Massachusetts relating to the Revolution.
Faneuil Hall Marketplace or Quincy Market, on the Freedom Trail, consists of four buildings and a cobblestone plaza, built during the 1800s. The marketplace features hundreds of shops, stalls, pubs, restaurants, and plenty of street entertainment. The Holocaust Memorial and the New England Aquarium on the waterfront are within walking distance. Many local artisans sell their crafts at the market and in the small shops along Merchants Row and Marsh Square. The restaurants are as diverse as the neighborhood and feature Asian, Greek, Mexican, Italian, and a wide array of international cuisines. Faneuil Hall Marketplace features special events throughout the year with one of the city’s most extravagant light shows during the Christmas holidays.
Hanover Street is the neighborhood’s “Main Street.” Once an Indian path to the shoreline, the street is now the locale for many neighborhood cafes, Italian restaurants, churches, and businesses. A section of Hanover Street is closed to traffic on Fridays and Saturdays for an open-air market.
The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, named after President John F. Kennedy’s mother, features beautiful landscaping, specialty lighting, fountains, and art. The park runs through several of the city’s neighborhoods, including the street where Mrs. Kennedy was born.

One of the North End’s best features is that it’s regarded as the safest neighborhoods in the city and is where many families are choosing to live and raise their children. This region of the city has one of the area’s lowest crime rates and an excellent school system. Among the top schools in the area are St. John School and the John K. Eliot School. Boston’s public transportation system the “T,” runs through this section of the city and the MBTA provides train service to the suburbs.
The densely populated residential area features many renovated buildings that are stylish condos. Many of the commercial buildings on the waterfront that have been remodeled were constructed during the late 19th and early 20th-centuries and have spectacular views of the harbor and the islands. A lot of the neighborhood condos are on the water in historic buildings, have easy access to the waterfront parks, the Green and Orange lines, commuter rail service, supermarkets, shops, and restaurants.
The current median price of Boston’s homes is $719,000 which has gone up 9.3 percent since 2016. The home prices are expected to rise 3.9 percent within the next year. The average price per square foot for homes in the Boston Metro region is $661. In the North End, the median home price is $714,700 and has increased by 11 percent in the last year. The average price per square foot for homes in the North End is $1,100. The average price for rental properties in Boston is $2,700, and in the North End, the price is $2,900.
